We’re just a few short hours away from America’s very own hot dogs, apple pie, temporary-deafness-due-to-aggressive-lighting-of-hand-held-explosives holiday!
Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays of the year because it stands for everything that is right in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Whether your patriotic plans include food, friends, family, fireworks or some combination of all four, here is my list of the top apps you’ll need to not only survive, but also to celebrate in style.
1. Toilet Finder | Free
There is nothing worse when you’re on a road trip with someone like my friend Aaron (who has a little bladder) than not being able to find a toilet when your tank is full. When going on a road trip with him, I always keep the updated Toilet Finder app handy. It locates all the toilet facilities around you in a quick glance. With a database of more than 70,000 toilet facilities, you’re sure to find a place to relieve the tension in the car. If you are an Apple Watch early adopter, you’re in luck – a toilet is a quick flick away on their watch interface.
2. Wunderlist | Freemium
Being a good Lutheran, I know a thing or seven about pot-lucks. From the green Jello with marshmallows, to cinnamon bread with cheez whiz and green olive open face sandwiches, to red Jello with shoestring carrots, coordinating a great get together can be as stressful as picking out the right Jello mold. Marcomm Manager Camille swears by Wunderlist – a comprehensive list generator that lets you assign tasks, food items, really anything, to your guests. They get notified when you assign it to them, and you get notified when it’s completed!
3. GrillTime | $1.99
One purpose apps make me happy and this one is brilliant for what it is – it tells you how long to grill your hotdog, chicken, steak, veggies, and whatever kinds of food you can imagine. This is perfect for the forgetful grillmaster because it shoots notifications when your meat is ready to eat!
4. Texts From Founding Fathers | Free
George, Ben, and Thomas become your BFF (best friend forever) while inspiring your patriotic side. This fun app arms you with words of wisdom and historical knowledge.
5. DarkSky | $3.99
I’m a Dark Sky evangelist because its simple, yet beautiful user interface provides accurate real-time notifications when you’re about to get soaked. My friends refer to this app as ‘magical’ and claim its sorcery must be against their religion, but I promise it’s not. The power comes from Forecast.io and their public weather API.
Your mobile device may very well be your saving grace this Independence Day, but try to take an hour or two and enjoy a hot dog, a beverage, and most importantly, your family and friends. Make some memories and get home safely. Happy Independence Day!
